The secret to getting what you want in life

Image
How To Get Exactly What You Want J. Paul Getty was quoted for his formula for success: “Rise early, work hard, strike oil.” I’m a huge supporter of the practice of rising early (and if you’re not, you probably should be). But regardless of when you wake up, the other two actions in this formula are “work hard,” and “strike oil.” When I first ran across this quote ten years ago, I had to laugh, because it looked like Getty was saying you have to work hard and hope to get lucky. But a decade later, I can see the more relevant meaning, and I’m about to share with you why Getty’s concept, perhaps more than anything else you might ever read, could be what gets you everything you want for the rest of your life. It’s all about your expectations In short, it all comes down to your personal expectation as to whether or not you’re going to strike oil. That’s it. That’s where it all starts. I can say this because that’s how reality works – you’re not going to get anything if you don’...

Success Lessons From Baseball Enthusiasm And Excitement Can Make The Difference

Success Lessons From Baseball Enthusiasm And Excitement Can Make The Difference I remember, about 35 years ago, reading two books by Frank Bettger, the baseball player, about how enthusiasm made all the difference in his life. His books made a difference in my life at the time and are still well worth reading and re-reading. Probably the most famous of his books is “How I raised myself from failure to success in selling”. Frank died in 1981 but his books and priceless ideas live on. In 1907, he played baseball for Johnstown in Pennsylvania for $175 dollars a month. He was young and ambitious but was fired for being lazy. He was not really lazy but had been trying to control his nervousness by being laid back. His manager told him: “Whatever you do after you leave here, for heaven’s sake, wake yourself up and put some life and enthusiasm into your work.” Frank went to Chester, Pennsylvania where he played baseball for only $25 a month. Frank commented: “Well, I couldn’t feel ver...

Do Subliminals messages work?

Image
Subliminal Messages The Cia In 1957 the world was awakened to the frightening possibility that our minds could be manipulated. In a simple experiment, by James Vicary, involving popcorn, coke and a cinema audience, we were lead to believe sales were increased through the use of subliminal messages. Although the experiment was “unsubstantiated” and it has never been replicated successfully, the belief that subliminal messages can affect our behaviour lingers on in the public mindset. It sent fear through the civilized world. In Washington, D.C., legislators headed by William Dawson, began a campaign to ban the use of subliminal messages in television and radio. He warned that if subliminal messages were put to political propaganda purposes they could serve and maintain a totalitarian government. Although there was no real evidence to substantiate this claim the public outcry was deafening. Even then, as today, many scientists had serious reservations about the effectiveness o...
